Proof of God’s power and love

A few months ago, I moved into a new house. To get down from the bedroom to the bathroom, there is a small staircase with four steps, and there is a night-light that illuminates these steps. During my second night in the house, though, I woke up and headed to the bathroom but somehow forgot about the steps. Losing my balance, I felt myself falling to the floor and cried out, “Oh, no!”
After hitting the floor, I immediately affirmed, “There has been no accident; I am fine!” This affirmation sprang from what I had learned in Christian Science.
Christian Science was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy. She wrote the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which illuminates the spiritual meaning of the Bible. In the Lord’s Prayer are the words, “Thy kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10). The spiritual sense of this in Science and Health is, “Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present” (p. 16). This means that God’s kingdom is present now and always. In God’s kingdom everything is good, and therefore “accidents are unknown to God” (Science and Health, p. 424). So they do not have to have any reality in our consciousness.
Even as I knew that I was unharmed, I was still faced with pain, blood, and bruises. In order to focus on spiritual reality, I stopped touching my head, cleaned my arm, put on a bandage, and looked away from my leg. As I approached the bed, I tried to think of myself as spiritual, the reflection of God.
Suddenly, I was overcome with a feeling of loneliness, followed by the thought that I needed a dog to keep me company. I live alone, and since I was new to town, I had not yet connected with my neighbors. I had no idea whom to ask for help. I started sweating profusely, felt very dizzy, and was about to faint.
But then I realized I wasn’t alone. I am never alone because God is always with me. A passage from Science and Health explains: “The God-principle is omnipresent and omnipotent. God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power” (p. 473).
I prayed to see myself as spiritual and began trying to say aloud “the scientific statement of being” from Science and Health. I hear this text read every week at the end of our Sunday church service, so I know it well. It begins: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (p. 468).
